Copy Existing Reference Numbers in Gedcom File

This plugin will copy the current record IDs in a Gedcom file to either the Custom ID, Automated ID or a UDF value.  This is useful if you have used the numbers from the originating program for physical filing or in other add on systems.

It is designed to work on a Gedcom File PRIOR to opening the file in Family Historian.  Family Historian will only renumber imported records, if the record ids are non numeric or very long.

This can then be used if needed to cross reference the old numbers, should Family Historian need to renumber.

To use, please open the sample Project or “another” Project, then run the program and select your gedcom file.

DO NOT open your gedcom file in Family Historian before running the plugin to retain the old numbers.  The plugin will create a new gedcom file in the same folder as the original with -new added to the end of the file name.

  1. Jane … hi … this is John Snelson and I have been a FH user since the demise of TMG and before that since the demise of Ultimate Family Tree … and before that …. oh for too many years, ROOTSIII. The ID number for each person in my database has travelled with me for 30 years.

I have reason to send a Gedcom from FH to Family Tree Maker. However, the FTM importing program ignores the FH INDI identifying number and just numbers the resulting Id Ref Number sequentially as it reads the incoming Gedcom in FTM allocating at number the first records and then others 1 at a time, sequentially …. ignoring the INDI number in the incloing file.

Problem is I need to keep the FH Id Number as it appears or is used in many publications and on filing physical original documents.

The exported FH Gecom positions the ROOT person first in the exported Gedcom file. Secondly, there are gaps in the seqauence as many persons have been deleted in FH over the years, and does not detect this. Result is mayhem.

This brings me to the solution … how do I in FH copy the Id Number to a Custome Reference Number. Can I use this plugin ?

    Any help much appreciated.

  2. No need for this plugin for that.

You can just use the Tools>Work with Record Identifiers in Family Historian to copy the FH record id to various fields.
The plug-in is designed to be used on Gedcom which is not in Family Historian,  to keep non numeric record IDs created by other programs.
