Export Gedcom File ‘Multimedia Preference’ Advice

Introduction

When media export errors are reported an option to inhibit similar messages is offered with the errors logged in the Result Set.

The Multimedia Preference modes of the Basic Options tab are summarised below:

  • (PART~LMO) Part Frames in Export Folder & Local Media Full File Paths
Exports Face/Detail part-frames as cropped files for Local Media and often excludes full-frame versions.
  • (FULL~LMO) Full Frames in Export Folder & Local Media Full File Paths
Exports all images as full-frame files linked to Local Media but without any part-frame images.
  • (ALL~LMO) Part & Full in Export Folder & Local Media Full File Paths
    Combines the above two options.
  • (PART~ABS) Part Frames in Export Folder & Media Record Full File Paths
Exports Face/Detail part-frames as cropped files for Media Records and often excludes full-frame versions.
  • (FULL~ABS) Full Frames in Export Folder & Media Record Full File Paths
Exports all images as full-frame files linked to Media Records but without any part-frame images.
  • (ALL~ABS) Part & Full in Export Folder & Media Record Full File Paths
    Combines the above two options.
  • (FILE~REL) Use Existing Media Files with Media Record Existing Paths
Keeps relative links for Media Records and is the default for (FH6) Family Historian 6.2 destination.
  • (FILE~ABS) Use Existing Media Files with Media Record Full File Paths
Makes absolute links for Media Records and is the default for the (GST) GedSite destination.
  • (WIPE~ALL) Exclude all the Multimedia Files and Media Records entirely
Excludes all Media from the export and is the default for most online product destinations.

Some target products support special Media (OBJE) features as described in the GEDCOM Destination advice.

Media Format
  • PART~LMO & FULL~LMO & ALL~LMO create a Local Media Object for each Media file using absolute file paths.
    There are no Media Records.
  • PART~ABS & FULL~ABS & ALL~ABS create a Media Record for each Media file using absolute file paths.
Any unused Media Records are discarded.
  • FILE~REL keeps the original Media format for each Media Record & Local Media Object with relative/absolute file paths unchanged.
Any unused Media Records are discarded.
  • FILE~ABS is the same as FILE~REL but with any relative paths converted to absolute paths.
  • WIPE~ALL excludes all Media from the export.

All file links use GEDCOM 5.5.1 FILE tags.

Media Files

Exported Media file names are derived according to the Part Frame File Naming option as explained in How are the exported Multimedia file names derived? Any non-image Media files are handled as if no Face/Detail part-frame exists.

  • PART~LMO & PART~ABS export Face/Detail frames as cropped images where Max image height/Max image width limit their size and Use the JPEG file format… favours the JPEG file type. If no Face/Detail frame exists then the full-frame image is substituted.
  • FULL~LMO & FULL~ABS export all images as full-frame files ignoring any Face/Detail frames.
  • ALL~LMO & ALL~ABS export pairs of images using both the above styles, except where neither a Face/Detail frame nor Link Note caption exists, when only the full-frame file is exported.
  • FILE~REL & FILE~ABS & WIPE~ALL do not export any files and the first two use the files within the Project.

If Apply the settings above to all image files… is ticked then Max image height/Max image width and Use the JPEG file format… apply to full-frames too.

Media Notes

The textual Media fields are usually converted to labelled Note field text, where the label is defined by the Labels Set A/B tabs:

  • Caption Note: text is from the Link Note in the Links tab of the Media Window and the bottom of the Edit Media Item dialogue associated with the Use Note as Caption option.
  • Picture Note: text is from the Note box in the Media Record and the Picture Note in the Edit Media Item dialogue.
  • Media Date: text is from the Date in both the Media Record and Edit Media Item dialogue.
  • Keywords: text is from the Keywords in both the Media Record and the Edit Media Item dialogue.

Those appear in each Media Note as summarised below:

  • PART~LMO & PART~ABS & FULL~LMO include any Caption Note specifically linked to the original Media item, and any Picture Note, Media Date, or Keywords.
  • FULL~ABS & FILE~REL & FILE~ABS include EVERY Caption Note linked to the original Media item, and any Picture Note, Media Date, or Keywords.
  • ALL~LMO & ALL~ABS usually export a pair of images:
    • The cropped image includes any Caption Note specifically linked to the original Media item OR any Picture Note but never both, and any Media Date, or Keywords.
    • The full-frame image includes any Picture Note, Media Date, or Keywords.
