Introduction
GEDKeeper offers comprehensive support for GEDCOM 5.5.1 and runs on Windows, Mac, Linux & Android. See GEDKeeper for news and MajorGeeks for the download. See the Migration Guide below for migrating the exported GEDCOM and Media files into the GEDKeeper program.
Most Multimedia Conversion modes are supported but those using Media Record Full File Paths are best.
The Character Set Encoding defaults to UTF-8 with all Unicode characters supported.
The [[private]] Text Option defaults to Include private text but remove the [[ ]].
The Rich Text Formatting defaults to Remove rich text codes leaving just plain text.
If GEDKeeper is not running on Windows but on Mac, Linux, etc, then in the FH Plugin Basic Options tab, under Shared Settings, enable the Use / path separators option.
See both the (GKP+) Full Data Export Details and (GKP-) Brief Data Export Details below.
Migration Guide
It is possible to run GEDKeeper then use File > Open… and select the FH Plugin Export folder and the Project…GKP UTF8.ged file. However, then GEDKeeper will save any changes in that Plugin Export folder. So it is advisable to copy the Project…GKP UTF8.ged file to a dedicated GEDKeeper folder and open it there.
If GEDKeeper is running on another computer then the entire Plugin Export folder contents must be copied to that computer and the Media FILE paths in the GEDCOM file manually edited to match the path on that computer by using a global replacement.
Currently, Media are linked via Media Records using GEDKeeper Store type: Link to file with absolute File paths so the Media files cannot be moved (unless the GEDCOM FILE paths are manually edited). The Media Store type: Saving to the store is difficult to support but can be achieved by manually editing the GEDCOM Media FILE paths and copying all Media files into the local storage folder.
