Ancestral Quest Basics is free, and the bought version offers advanced features. Both run on Windows and also on Mac but using CodeWeavers Crossover. Visit Ancestral Quest for program details. Its GEDCOM implementation is less than perfect and has been discussed with the developers.
See the Migration Guide for migrating the exported GEDCOM and Media files into any Ancestral Quest version.
Most Multimedia Conversion modes are supported, but the Local Media Object modes are best.
The Character Set Encoding option defaults to UTF-8 but works for UTF-16 & ANSI and all Unicode characters are supported.
The [[private]] Text Option defaults to Include private text but remove the [[ ]].
The Rich Text Formatting defaults to Remove rich text codes leaving just plain text.
After running the FH Plugin open the Ancestral Quest program.
Use File > New to Create New Family File and choose an AQ filename matching the FH Project.
Use File > Import and choose the FH Plugin Export folder and the Project … AQP UTF8.ged file to import. In the GEDCOM Import dialogue, tick Import Scrapbook Items to include Media.
For subsequent imports, use File > Close to close that AQ file, and in File > New choose the same file and the option to replace it. Otherwise, the import will add duplicate new records to the existing database, and Tools > Merge will have to be used, which is laborious.
