Export Gedcom File (FTL) Family Tree Maker (legacy)

Introduction

This Family Tree Maker (legacy) mode intended GEDCOM and Media files to be exported to FTM, updated with Ancestry hints, and returned to FH as described in the Migration Guide below. However, the return to FH import Plugin has never been developed. The mode has only been retained for backwards compatibility. Visit http://www.mackiev.com/ftm/ for FTM product details.

Most modes of Multimedia Conversion are allowed but defaults to All Frames via Absolute Link Records.

The Character Set Encoding defaults to UTF-8 with all Unicode characters supported.

The [[private]] Text Option defaults to Include private text but remove the [[ ]].

The Rich Text Formatting defaults to Remove rich text codes leaving just plain text.

See both the (FTL+) Full Data Export Details and (FTL-) Brief Data Export Details below.

Migration Guide

After using the FH Plugin, run Family Tree Maker and use its import GEDCOM feature to choose the FH Plugin Export folder and the Project…FTL UTF8.ged file to import.

Details … TO BE DEFINED

(FTL+) Full Data Export Details

FTM supports only a subset of GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5 so some standard GEDCOM details are not imported successfully.

To preserve the original FH data, many GEDCOM details are moved to a Record or Fact local Note in a user friendly ‘Name Tag‘ style, comprising a level number, the tag name, and its value, e.g.

0) Record Id: [I6]
1) Gender: M
1) Parents: [F2] ...of Anthony Edward MUNRO and Susan Isabel DOWLING
2) Pedigree: Adopted
1) Spouse: [F10] ...of Ian Stephen MUNRO and Charlotte CARRINGTON
1) Media Object:	[O6] Ian Munro
1) Changed:
2) Date: 23 SEP 2014
3) Time: 16:40:44

Sometimes details are moved to a synthesised Custom Event or Note Record or Source Record with its name prefixed with an omega Ω to differentiate them from original records.

A warning Source record named Ω ~ DO NOT ALTER ANY Ω RECORDS BELOW ~ is always created.

Header Record (HEAD)

All Header lines are copied in ‘Name Tag‘ style to a synthetic Source record named Ω Header Rec: HEAD.
The SOURce tag value is changed to FTM to imitate an FTM 2014 Gedcom and enable Media Record local Notes.
The CHARacter encoding tag value is set to UNICODE for UTF16 mode, UTF-8 for UTF8 mode, and ANSI otherwise.
The VERS, NAME, CORP, FILE, SUBM, _VAR & _UID tag lines are removed.
See Other Options tab Header Submitter 1 SUBM:

★ Named List Entry (_LIST, _FLAG, _NOTE, _IDS)
See Extra Options tab Named List Entry 1 _LIST:
All Named Lists are removed by default, but the Create Note Record & Create Source Record options do function.

★ File Root (_ROOT)
See Extra Options tab File Root 1 _ROOT:
The File Root tag is removed by default, but the Create Note Record & Create Source Record options do function.
The root Individual Record itself is moved to be the first record after the HEADer record.

Individual & Family Records (INDI, FAM)

Most lines are moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the Record local Note or a Fact local Note.
In FTM the value on any Fact tag is called its Description as defined below.

★ Nickname, Given Name Used (NICK, _USED)
See Extra Options tab Person Nickname 2 NICK: & Given Name 2 _USED:
Any Nickname or Given Named Used is enclosed in quotes and placed before the Surname.
Alternatively, they can become an ALIAs tag with any comma converted to or.

See Extra Options tab Record Flags 1 _FLGS: & Marriage Status 1 _STAT:
Any Record Flags, Pedigree data, or Marriage Status are converted to a Record local Note with a Record Flag: Relationship: or Marriage Status: label.

★ Multimedia (OBJE)
All links to Media Records and local Media Objects are converted according to the Basic Options chosen, with details preserved in ‘Name Tag‘ style local Note fields.
For each Individual record, the most preferred Media tab item without Exclude from Diagrams set, uses the _PHOTO tag instead of OBJE, but only for the Media conversions (PART/FULL/ALL/FILE~ABS) via Absolute Link Records.

★ Source Citations (SOUR)
FTM only supports Source Citations for Facts, it links Media to the Citation itself, and reserves Citation local Notes for its own purposes.
So Record level Citations are moved to a synthesised custom Event named Ω Whole Record Citation.
All Media links in a Source Record are copied to every Citation of that Source.
Any Citation local Note is moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to its Text From Source field.
All other Source Citations are removed.

Note Records (NOTE)

Any subsidiary tags are moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style into the Note Record text.

Place Records (_PLAC)

See Extra Options tab Place Record 0 @P%d+@:
Each Place record becomes a synthesised Source record named Ω Place Rec: plus the Place Name, with all details copied in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the Note field. Any linked Media are retained.

Repository Records (REPO)

FTM 2014 Repository records only support Name, Address, Email & Phone Number as one line fields, so all other fields are removed.
All fields are moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the Note of a synthesised Source record named Ω Repository: plus the Repository Name and Record Id.

★ Record E-mail, Website (_EMAIL, _WEB)
See Extra Options tab Record E-mail 1 _EMAIL: & Record Website 1 _WEB:
All E-mail and Website addresses are appended to one EMAIL tag.

★ Record Phone Number (PHON)
See Extra Options tab Record Phone 1 PHON:
All Phone Numbers are appended to one PHON tag.

Source Records (SOUR)

Any Short Title (ABBR) is moved to the full Title, unless that already exists.
All fields are moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the record Note.

Media Records (OBJE)

FTM Media records only support Title, File Link & Note fields, so all other fields are removed.
All fields are moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the record Note.

Synthetic Media records may be created for each Face/Detail Frame cropped image file. The Title is the same as the full-frame Media record, and the Note is either blank or contains the text from the original Link/Note field.

The filenames are formatted as explained in the Frequently Asked Questions.

★ Linked File (_FILE)
If a PART~LMO, FULL~LMO or ALL~LMO Basic Option is chosen, then all Media Record links are converted to local Media Objects, and all Media Records are removed.
If a PART~ABS, FULL~ABS, ALL~ABS, FILE~REL or FILE~ABS Basic Option is chosen, then each Media _FILE tag is converted to a Gedcom Draft 5.5.1 FILE tag.
In most cases, the Linked File uses a full absolute file path, but FILE~REL retains the relative to Media folder path.

★ Format Tag (FORM)
See Extra Options tab Media Format %d FORM:
Each FORMat tag is converted to Gedcom Draft 5.5.1 style subsidiary to the FILE tag.

Submitter & Submission Records (SUBM, SUBN)

Each Submitter & Submission record is moved in ‘Name Tag‘ style to the Note of a synthetic Source record named Ω Submitter: or Ω Submission: plus the record Name and Id.

Date Field (DATE)

See Extra Options tab Date Field %d DATE:
Usually Date field words are in UPPER case, but they may be converted to Title case, e.g. AFTER JAN 1900 becomes After Jan 1900.
